Monument of Mihail Ciachir

In 1991, in the city Ceadir-Lunga, in the front of the cultural center, was built the monument of the archpriest and illuminate Mihail Ciachir. Ciachir’s personality is very important for the Gagauz people. He was the first who began to write works in the Gagauz language, including translations of religious literature such as the Psalter, the Slavonic language into the Gagauz language.

Mihail Ciachir was born in 1861, in the family of a official state. In Chisinau he graduated the theological seminary. Since then, he was concerned that his people do not have books in the Gagauz language. From 1904 the dreams begin to become reality, the Synod giving permission to publish religious literature in the Gagauz native language. Since 1907 entire passages of the Old Testament have been born, the Psalter have been translated into Gagauz. Starting with 1918, when Bessarabia became part of the kingdom of Romania, Ciachir adapted the Gagauz language to the Latin script. Later, he published several books about the history and customs of Gagauzia.
