  • The monument of Victory from Vulcanesti

In the city of Vulcanesti, on the site of the victory of the Russian army over the Turks in the battle of Cahul in 1770, was erected an exceptional monument in the form of a column, built by the architect Bouffeau. The work began in 1844 and was completed in September 1849. The idea of creating the monument belongs to Russian count Vorontsov, who at that time served as general governor of region New Russia.

The Battle of Cahul in 1770 was one of the decisive battles in the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774. Exceptional is the fact that the Russian army, being 10 times smaller than the Turkish one, has defeated its opponents in a flash.

The monument represent a stone column with a height of 25 meters, which is mounted on a pedestal of 5 meters. The column is crowned with a capital, above which is a metal cross and a reversed crescent, which symbolizes victory over the Turks. On one side of the pedestal you can see the Rumeantsev family coat of arms with the inscription “Non Solum armis” which means “Not only with weapons”. On the other hand, on the bronze plate, is written that on July 21 1770, count Rumeantsev, with an army of 17,000 soldiers defeated the Turkish army in the amount of 150,000 soldiers.

At various times in the history, the monument was destroyed and restored and now appears in front of visitors almost in its original form.
