The cathedral “St. John the Baptist” is one of the main tourist attractions of the City Comrat, and celebrates its dedication on January th 20th. Historian cannot say exactly when the cathedral was founded, the opinions being divided between the dates of 1820 and 1840. It is considered that the founder is the priest Feodosie Marunevici.

In Soviet times, when churches, monasteries and cathedrals were closed throughout the country, the fate of Comrat Cathedral was the same. Since 1961, here was opened a museum with various artifacts. The memory of the past was seen in the Christian mural paintings, on the walls of the church. The religious church books were burned right inside the cathedral, the traces of mourning are seen even today, being impossible to clean. Most of the icons were removed from the church and transported to the town bakery, also being burned in the bakery ovens. In one of these days, one of the icons felt down from the truck, and saved by a local, who kept the icon in his own house until 1988, later it was returned to the cathedral. The church services were restored, and the cathedral took on a new life. Archdeacon Ilian, was the one who initiated the resumption of the activity of the church, until now serving in the church.
